Of all the celebrity chefs and television personalities that feature on cooking shows, Gordon Ramsay is undoubtedly my favourite. I love his no-nonsense approach, his clear understanding of the restaurant business and his straight talking. Although he is known for his foul mouth, he also shows his softer and more caring side in may of his shows. I find him fascinating to watch and I am addicted to anything in which he appears. Here are 10 facts about Gordon Ramsay.

  • He was born in Renfrewshire in Scotland. This surprises many people as they associate this chef with England.
  • He had a career in football before injuring himself and switching career paths. 
  • His first head chef position was at La Tante Claire in Chelsea, England.
  • In 1998, he opened his first restaurant called Restaurant Gordon Ramsay.
  • Ramsay was appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in the Queen’s 2006 honour’s list. 
  • He was inducted into the Culinary Hall of Fame in 2013.
  • Ramsay married Cayetana ‘Tana’ Elizabeth Hutchence in 1996. The couple has four children together; Megan, Holly, Jack, and Matilda. 
  • He fell 26 feet off a cliff while filming in Iceland’s Westman Islands. Fortunately, he landed in the water and was unharmed. 
  • He caused controversy in 2009 when it was discovered that one of his restaurants, the Foxtrot Oscar in Chelsea, was using pre-prepared food. 
  • Ramsay currently owns 10 restaurants in England, eight in North America, four in France, two in Italy, one in Ireland, and eight further restaurants in various locations across the globe.

Food News: The Growing Trend Towards Veganism

More people than ever are deciding to follow a vegan diet. While for some, this is for ethical reasons, others are choosing to follow a plant-based diet as they believe it is beneficial to their health. There are also others who follow a temporary vegan diet as a way of cleansing their systems and those who continue to eat meat but are including more vegan dishes in their diet. This trend is also being followed by the food industry with vegan eating establishments popping up all over the world.

One such example of this is plant-based chef Matthew Kenney (pictured left) who has recently opened a vegan restaurant called ‘Alibi’ in the Ovolo Hotel in Sydney. Although many traditional Australian dishes are based on steak or seafood, the chef believes that his food can compete with these dishes and has described it as sexier. In fact, the famous chef believes that vegan lifestyles will become even more the norm in the future.

‘Alibi’ has a diverse menu that serves dishes including tacos, burgers, pizza, and lasagne. These dishes would usually contain meat and cheese, but Matthew Kenney has redesigned these meals so they are completely plant-based. He has even found a way to recreate cheese using ingredients including cashew nuts and sunflower seeds.

The trend towards plant-based diets is also obvious in the number of celebrities who have now become vegan. Will.i.am of The Black Eyed Peas (pictured right) announced in January that he had made the transition to veganism. He has credited following a vegan diet with his dramatic weight loss and improved health.

7 Things You Might Not Know About Guy Fieri

Guy Fieri is best-known as a television host for programs on the Food Network, including ‘Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives’. His trademark platinum hair and bubbly personality make him stand out against other American food show hosts. In recent years, he has risen to prominence, so most people are aware of his existence. However, there are probably many things that you do not know about this television personality. Here are seven things you might not know about Guy Fieri.

  1. He Changed His Name

Guy Fieri was born as Guy Ferry. When he married his wife Lori in 1995, he changed his surname to the way his family traditionally spelled the name. It is pronounced ‘FEE-eddy’ as this is the Italian pronunciation.

  1. His Sister Died of Cancer

As a child, Fieri’s sister battled with cancer. Sadly, the cancer returned in her adulthood. At the age of 38, she was diagnosed with metastic melanoma and died within a year. Guy Fieri believes that his sister’s death has changed the way he thinks about life.

  1. He Was Passionate About Food from Childhood

Guy Fieri has always been passionate about food and began cooking as a child. He even had his own pretzel cart as a teen. While at high school, he studied in France for a year and stayed in a boarding house. The cook there was so terrible that it made him determined to get into the food industry and deliver decent food.

  1. He Didn’t Want Platinum Hair

Fieri’s platinum hairstyle was not the style of his choice. He always wore his hair long and this was distressing his hairdresser. In the end, he told her to do whatever she wanted. She chopped off his locks and dyed them platinum. Although he was shocked at first, he is now accustomed to the colour and this is now his signature look.

  1. His Favourite Snack His Apple Wrapped in Salami

The TV host has described his favourite snack as the poor man’s prosciutto and melon. As a child, he would slice a Granny Smith Apple thinly and wrap it in salami. This is still one of his favourite snacks to this day.

Most people think that Guy Fieri is simply a television host. However, he is actually a restauranteur with a long history in the industry. He first opened Johnny Garlic’s in Santa Rosa California in 1999. He has gone on to own several more restaurants in various locations in the United States and licenses out his name to restaurants.

  1. He Collects Classic Cars

Other than food, his main passion is cars. He owns several American classic cars, including a 1969 Chevrolet Impala SS and a 1968 Pontiac Firebird.

RECIPE: Vegetable Thai Red Curry

Thai food is full of different flavours due to the wide range of herbs and spices used in authentic Thai cuisine. One of my personal favourite dishes is vegetable Thai red curry as it is creamy with an after kick of spice. This is a delicious meal that is suitable for all the family, including vegetarians. Here is how to make a vegetable Thai red curry. 

Ingredients for Vegetable Thai Red Curry

  • 1 courgette (zucchini)
  • 2 carrots
  • I red pepper
  • 100g green beans
  • 8 spring onions
  • 3 cloves of garlic, crushed
  • 1 red chilli
  • 3 tbsp Thai red curry paste, ready-made or fresh using this recipe
  • 2 tins coconut milk
  • 2 tbsp olive oil

How to Make Vegetable Thai Red Curry

  1. Prepare the paste if you are using homemade following the instructions in this recipe.
  2. Slice the peppers and courgettes, julienne the carrots, and chop the green beans into one-centimetre strips.
  3. Add the carrots and green beans to boiling water and cook for five minutes before draining.
  4. Heat the olive oil in a pan and put over a medium heat.
  5. Add the chilli and crushed garlic to the pan and fry for two minutes.
  6. Add the curry paste to the pan and cook for a further two minutes to release the flavours.
  7. Add all the vegetables to the pan and stir around so they are lightly coated with the paste, garlic, and chilies. Cook for a further two minutes.
  8. Add the coconut milk and stir into the mixture.
  9. Cook for 20 minutes stirring occasionally.
  10. Serve with jasmine or long grain rice. 

 

 

 

 

Gordon Ramsay to Open a New Atlantic City Restaurant

Although Gordon Ramsay already has one restaurant in Atlantic City, he is now set to open a second. His new restaurant is the Gordon Ramsay Steak and will be at Harrah’s Resort. This will replace The Steakhouse at the resort and will join Harrah’s other restaurants; a Spanish and Mexican restaurant called Veracruz and Martorano’s, an Italian. This will be a great addition to the food scene in Atlantic City, which already includes Gordon Ramsay Pub & Grill. He is partnered in this restaurant by Caesars Entertainment.

Ramsay already has two Gordon Ramsay Steak restaurants operating in the United States. The first was opened in 2012 and is located in Paris on the Las Vegas strip. The second restaurant, which opened in 2017, is in the Horseshoe Casino in Baltimore.

Customers who visit the new restaurant can expect chic décor and a fantastic ambiance for socializing and eating food of the highest standard. The menu is expected to include the finest cuts of meat, including American Kobe and 28-day-matured beef.

If the menus of the other Gordon Ramsay Steak restaurants are anything to go by, then it is also likely that there will be influences taken from Ramsay’s British roots. Beef Wellington is one British classic that diners are likely to see on the menu and it is possible that the dessert menu will include sticky toffee pudding.

This new restaurant is just the latest in Ramsay’s ventures as he already owns over 40 restaurants in various locations across the globe. Thirteen of these are in the United Kingdom and the United States is home to a further twelve.

Aside from these businesses, Gordon Ramsay has achieved success and fame on both sides of the Atlantic as a celebrity chef and appears in many television series. These include ‘Ramsay’s Kitchen Nightmares’, ‘Hotel Hell’, ‘The F Word’, the United States version of ‘Masterchef’, and ‘Hell’s Kitchen’.
